Pico Laser
We are so excited to finally introduce Pico Laser to The Skyn Lounge! We’ve spent a lot of time researching and considering which technology we wanted to bring into the clinic next, and Pico Laser was an absolute no-brainer. The science, versatility and incredible potential of this technology made it an easy decision, and we cannot wait to see where this takes our clients skin.
What Is Pico Laser?
Picosecond laser technology is an advanced laser treatment that delivers ultra-short pulses of energy, measured in trillionths of a second, to target pigmentation, stimulate collagen production and improve overall skin quality. Unlike traditional lasers with longer pulse durations, picosecond lasers produce a predominantly photoacoustic effect, breaking down pigment particles while minimising thermal damage to surrounding tissues. This allows for effective skin rejuvenation with potentially reduced downtime, and less risk of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
What Skin Concerns Does Pico Laser Treat?
One of the reasons we're so excited to introduce the Cutera Enlighten to The Skyn Lounge is its versatility. Using two wavelengths, 532 nm and 1064 nm, this technology allows us to target pigmentation at different depths within the skin, while also offering treatments focused on improving overall skin quality and texture.
Skin concerns we can treat:
Pigmentation (freckles, sunspots, etc)
Melasma
Uneven skin tone + texture
Acne scarring
Fine lines + wrinkles
Tattoo removal
What treatment options do you offer for Pico Laser?
Our Cutera Enlighten allows us to offer a range of treatments targeting different skin concerns, each treatment uses specific laser settings and techniques, allowing us to tailor our approach to your individual skin needs.
Pico Genesis
Pico Genesis is designed to improve overall skin tone, clarity and quality. This treatment targets unwanted pigmentation while creating photoacoustic effects within the skin that can support dermal remodelling. It offers a gentle approach to skin rejuvenation with generally minimal downtime.
Who is it suited for? Clients experiencing uneven skin tone (freckles, sunspots), diffuse pigmentation, sun damage, melasma, dullness or early signs of skin ageing who are looking to improve their overall complexion.
Pico genesis FX
PICO Genesis FX takes skin rejuvenation a step further by using a specialised Micro Lens Array (MLA) to deliver fractionated laser energy into the skin. This creates microscopic treatment zones that stimulate the skin's natural repair processes and collagen remodelling, helping to improve skin texture and the appearance of scarring over time.
Who is it suited for? Clients with atrophic acne scarring, uneven skin texture, fine lines and ageing concerns would benefit from a more targeted approach to collagen induction therapy.
Pico Laser tattoo removal
Pico Laser uses ultra-short pulses of energy to target tattoo ink particles within the skin. The rapid delivery of energy creates a photoacoustic effect that breaks ink into smaller fragments, allowing the body's immune system to gradually process and remove them. Multiple treatments are generally required, with the number of sessions depending on the tattoo's colour, depth, density and age.
Who is it suited for? Clients wanting to remove or fade unwanted tattoos, including those preparing for a cover-up. Suitability and expected results depend on the ink colours and individual skin characteristics.
Pico Laser Spot Treatment
Unlike full-face rejuvenation treatments, spot treatments focus on individual areas of unwanted pigmentation. Laser energy is selectively absorbed by melanin within the targeted lesion, breaking pigment into smaller particles that can gradually be cleared as the skin heals. This allows us to address specific areas of pigmentation without necessarily treating the entire face.
It's important to note that some downtime is expected with spot treatments, as treated lesions will often darken and develop a superficial crust before naturally flaking away. This process typically occurs over 7–14 days, although healing times can vary. It's essential to allow the skin to heal naturally without picking or removing any crusting to minimise the risk of scarring and post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Who is it suited for? Clients with isolated, clinically assessed benign pigmented lesions, such as sunspots, solar lentigines and freckles, who want to target particular areas of pigmentation.
Is Pico Laser Painful?
Pico Laser treatments are generally well tolerated, although the level of discomfort will depend on the treatment being performed and your individual sensitivity. Most clients describe the sensation as a quick, warm snapping or flicking feeling against the skin.
PICO Genesis treatments are typically more comfortable, while more targeted treatments such as tattoo removal, pigmented lesion removal and PICO Genesis FX may feel more intense. Your clinician will discuss what to expect and may use cooling or other comfort measures where appropriate.
Are there any side effects?
As with any laser treatment, some temporary skin responses are expected. These may include redness, warmth, mild swelling and increased skin sensitivity, which generally settle within a few hours to several days. More targeted treatments, particularly pigmented lesion removal, may cause temporary darkening, crusting or flaking as the skin heals. Fractional treatments and tattoo removal can also involve more noticeable swelling, pinpoint bleeding or temporary crusting.
At The Skyn Lounge, we carefully assess your skin before treatment and provide personalised aftercare advice to support healing and minimise the risk of unwanted side effects.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Pico Laser treatments will I need?
The number of treatments required will depend on your individual skin concerns, the treatment being performed and how your skin responds, typically anwhere between 3-6 session depending on the laser treatment. Some pigmented lesions may improve significantly after one session, while concerns such as acne scarring, diffuse pigmentation and tattoo removal generally require multiple treatments. Your clinician will discuss a personalised treatment plan during your consultation.
How long does it take to see results?
Results develop gradually and depend on the concern being treated. Some pigmentation improvements may become visible once the treated area has healed, while changes in skin texture and acne scarring can take several weeks to months as collagen remodelling occurs. Tattoo fading is also progressive, with the body continuing to clear fragmented ink particles between sessions.
Can Pico Laser treat melasma?
Picosecond laser technology is effective for selected cases of melasma; however, melasma is a complex, chronic pigmentation condition influenced by factors including hormones, UV exposure and inflammation. A thorough skin assessment is essential to determine whether Pico Laser is suitable.
Can I have Pico Laser during summer?
Pico Laser treatments can be performed during summer, provided your skin is suitable and you can follow the recommended sun protection measures. Recent tanning, sunburn or significant UV exposure may increase the risk of unwanted pigmentation changes and could mean treatment needs to be postponed. Consistent sun protection before and after treatment is essential.
How do I know which Pico Laser treatment is right for me?
That's where we come in! Not all pigmentation, scarring or textural concerns respond to the same treatment approach. During your consultation, we'll assess your skin, discuss your concerns and determine whether PICO Genesis, PICO Genesis FX or targeted pigmentation treatment is the most appropriate option for you.
