Let’s talk about the importance of sunscreen!

If there is only one product we could recommend, it would be SPF. We always say, prevention is better than a cure, and there is no better way than introducing a SPF into your daily routine.

This Holy Grail product helps prevent sun damage, premature aging, inflammation and skin cancers.

SPF is important to use DAILY and injunction with your clinical treatments.

UVA and UVB:
There are both UVA and UVB rays that we need to protect our skin against. UVA is present all year round, no matter if it’s rain, hail or shine, and it has the ability to penetrate through clouds and glass. UVA is responsible for DNA damage in the skin, affecting premature aging, pigmentation and photo damage. UVB are the rays you can feel on a sunny day, leading to sunburn. Both UVA and UVB can result in skin cancers.

Difference between Physical and Chemical SPF:

In clinic, we stock physical SPF with mineral ingredients such as, zinc or titanium dioxide. Mineral based SPF is suitable for all skin types including reactive. We stand by a physical SPF over a chemical because, unlike a chemical sunscreen, a physical sits on top of the skin and reflects the UV rays instead of absorbing them. If the UV is absorbed it will cause heat in the skin that can cause an inflammatory response. This is not ideal for skin with acne, pigmentation and dermatitis.

How Much and How Often:

Applying SPF at least 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every 2-3 hours is ideal. Depending on the area, you may need to apply up to a teaspoon on each limb. For face/neck at least half a teaspoon is to be used.

Added Skin Benefits:
Along with protecting your skin from UV damage, we love a good SPF that will give your skin other benefits as well. Some added befits to our SPFs include; natural moisturising factors, heat releasing properties, skin brightening, wound healing and antibacterial. Along with these benefits, they also stimulate collagen and elastin, are anti-inflammatory, improve your skins barrier function and minimise pores.
